Dear Parents and Guardians, This month, students, teachers, and parents across Illinois will have the opportunity to participate in the twelfth annual statewide Illinois 5Essentials Survey. This survey provides valuable insights into the inner workings of Cobden Unit School District #17 and allows you, as parents, to share your thoughts on key elements that contribute to school effectiveness. About the Survey Administered online by UChicago Impact on behalf of the Illinois State Board of Education, the survey gathers data on five essential indicators that are proven to predict positive student outcomes, including improved attendance and higher test scores. These indicators are: Effective Leaders Collaborative Teachers Involved Families Supportive Environments Ambitious Instruction Research has shown that schools strong in at least three of these areas are 10 times more likely to see significant improvements in math and reading achievement. Who Participates? All Cobden Unit School District teachers and students in grades 4-8 will complete the survey. 5Essentials Reports will be generated if at least 50% of teachers and/or students participate. These reports will be shared with schools and districts in May 2025 and included in our Illinois School Report Card. Parent Participation In addition, CUSD #17 has opted to provide the Parent Supplement Survey. If at least 20% of parents complete the survey, we will receive a parent-specific report (though parent data will not be included in the official State Report Card). Your input is invaluable in helping us assess our school’s environment and guide future improvements. Please note that all responses are completely confidential and will never be linked to you or your child. Survey Details & How to Participate Survey Window: Open until March 31, 2025 Parent Survey Link: https://survey.5-essentials.org/illinois/?target_name=parent County Selection: Choose "Union" as the location of the school School: Select the school that aligns with your student. If you have students in multiple buildings, you can complete a survey for each. For more details or to view previous reports, visit https://www.5-essentials.org/illinois/5e/. If you have any questions, please contact 5Essentials Client Services at 1-866-440-1874 or visit their contact page. Thank you for your time and participation in this important initiative. Your feedback helps us make Cobden Unit School District even better for our students!

Dear Cobden Families, Next week, we are excited to celebrate National School Breakfast Week (March 3-7) with the theme "Clue In to Breakfast!" This special week highlights the importance of starting the day with a nutritious meal, helping students stay energized and ready to learn. To kick off the event, we have invited local law enforcement officers to join us for breakfast on Monday, March 3rd. This will be a great opportunity for students to connect with community members while enjoying a delicious morning meal. Additionally, we’ll be showcasing breakfast for lunch next week to encourage all students to "clue in" to the benefits of breakfast foods at any time of the day! We are also proud to share that we use as many locally sourced ingredients as possible and that many of our menu items are made from scratch right in our school kitchens. We are committed to providing fresh, high-quality meals that support both student health and our local farmers. We encourage you to talk with your child about the importance of eating breakfast and remind them to join us in the cafeteria for a fun and nutritious start to their day. Thank you for your support in making National School Breakfast Week a success!
