Mrs. Taylor & Mrs. Nash-Mayberry would like to thank Dr. Grant Miller of SIUC for obtaining a Library of Congress grant that allowed them to take 8 Junior High and 4 High School students on a 2-day overnight history retreat in which students analyzed and synthesized primary sources, learned about Special Collections at Morris Library, analyzed artifacts after a hike to the old Progress settlement, heard stories from local historians around the campfire, engaged in team building at Touch of Nature where they also spent the night in a cabin, participated in the Saluki Soar pamper pole, and deconstructed/reconstructed bicycles while learning the history of the bicycle. The high school students served as Library of Congress mentors to the 6th & 7th graders. They would also like to thank local historians Pat Brumleve, Judy Travelstead, Darrel Dexter, Duane & Linda Hileman, and Steve Haldeman for making the trip out to Touch of Nature to share their local stories.
