Cobden Receives Democracy School Recognition: Mrs. Nashberry and Mr. Self recently returned from the Democracy School conference near Naperville, where they accepted on behalf of the school the Illinois Democracy Schools award. Illinois Democracy Schools are schools recognized for school-wide commitment to promoting civic learning by all students, focusing on fostering participatory citizenship and emphasizing the fundamental ideals and principles of our constitutional democracy. This honor will appear on Cobden's Illinois school report card. The team consisted of 3 faculty members- team chair and social science teacher Jamie Nash-Mayberry, Spanish teacher Kevan Self, and Jr. high social science teacher Ashley Taylor, along with Superintendent Edwin Shoemate, and 5 students- Grace White, Tess Brummer, Dora Funes, Sam Ingold, and Kaylee Hall. The team identified many school strengths but those elements which stood out the most included:
Teaching/Design Strategy- Teachers design curriculum and utilize democratic teaching strategies in order to cultivate students’ civic knowledge, skills, dispositions, and critical thinking across disciplines and extracurricular activities.
Simulations of Democratic Processes- teachers provide opportunities for students to participate in simulations (mock elections, trials, case studies, problem solving, etc.) that allow students to learn about issues and practice civic skills in multiple disciplines.
Extracurricular Activities- School staff lead structured, organized, regular, and long-term extracurricular activities that foster civic learning and engagement and are accessible to, representative of, and attend to the needs and interests of the student body.
School Community Partnerships- School leaders and staff ensure that the school and its community are a resource for each other and that there are frequent and meaningful interactions with families and community partners.
The Cobden Junior-Senior High School Democracy Team is proud to have been recognized for this honor, thanks all of the great teachers across the various disciplines at both the Junior and Senior high levels for their commitment to these elements, and plans to celebrate by holding a democracy school week at the school TBA.
