March 31st was established as Cesar Chavez Day by President Barack Obama in 2014.The federal commemorative holiday celebrates the birth and legacy of the civil rights and labor movement activist Cesar Chavez. Through strikes, marches, and boycotts in California, he inspired millions of people across the country to fight for safe and healthy workplaces, better wages, improved workplace protections from sickness and disability, and other core rights and protections. To this day, farm workers are able to have better working conditions because Cesar Chavez believed in “La Causa”-the cause.
