Mrs. Wheeler, with the Occupational Therapy Assistant Program at Shawnee Community College, visited CHS today for a Lunch and Learn. Interested students learned about this amazing program at SCC and the different career paths they can take with this certification.

Students and staff took part in Outdoor Club's first kayaking voyage at Cedar Lake after school today. The school provided many of the kayaks and gear for those who didn't have their own.

Co Op student, Kohen Moore works at St. Francis Care in Murphysboro. Kohen assists the staff with the animals. His supervisor really appreciates his help with the large dogs. Kohen plans to open his own dog boarding business one day. He is gaining valuable skills at St. Francis!


Saturday both Lindsey Windings and Jaylyn Stroehlein read their essays at the Constitution Day celebration in Jonesboro. They were the winners for county-wide high school and junior high Union County D.A.R. Constitution Day Essay contests.




Some CYCA members volunteered Saturday at the Suicide Prevention & Awareness Walk in Cobden. Their help was much appreciated!

On September 13th, 2024, Cobden FFA participated in the SIU Horse Judging CDE at DuQuoin State Fairgrounds, alongside 58 other schools and 550 competitors. The outcome saw Cobden's varsity Horse Judging team place 39th out of 57 teams, while the junior varsity team secured the 24th position out of 49 teams, and the alternative team achieved the 19th position out of 35 teams. In terms of individual performance, Micah Brown from the varsity team ranked 47th out of 220 competitors, Shawnah Burgess from the junior varsity team ranked 66th out of 147 competitors, and Chloe Guthrie-Smith from the alternate team ended up in the 49th position out of 150 competitors. Cobden FFA expresses its gratitude to the community for the continuous support, enabling the students to compete at local and state-level competitions against participants from across the state.


Jessica Hoos with the University of Illinois Springfield met with students today for a Lunch and Learn. Students learned about all the majors, clubs, and scholarship opportunities U of I offers prospective students. Applications for Cobden students are FREE, and they offer the Prairie Promise, which can provide free tuition and fees for four years for eligible students. Our Education Pathway has come full circle! Class of 2022 graduate and current Elementary Education major, Connor Hartline presented to Educators Rising students about the Teacher Education Program at SIUC. Madison Pitts who is also a 2022 Education Pathway graduate is currently a teaching assistant at the high school. Students have said how much they enjoy having Miss Pitts in their class. Karleigh Ellis, class of 2023, is currently a sophomore at SEMO majoring in Family and Consumer Sciences Education. Karleigh is observing in Mrs. Engelmann’s class this semester. It is so exciting to see our students come back to observe and work with us. Our future teacher program is flourishing!

Sgt. Bryant, with the Army National Guard, visited CHS last Friday for our first Lunch and Learn of the year. He shared about all the opportunities the Guard can provide students in Southern Illinois.
