Mr. Kevan Self

Bio

Born and raised in San Pedro, California [the port of Los Angeles], Kevan Self is a product of his environment. His life experience has taught him that there are important lessons to be learned from all cultures and peoples. He lived and worked in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico from 1990 to 2003, working as an EFL and FFL instructor, Academic Coordinator, teacher trainer and French Program Head at PROULEX [Programa Universitario de Lenguas Extranjeras], Universidad de Guadalajara during most of his years there. Upon returning to the U.S., he worked for several years in both CESL and in the Department of Foreign Languages & Literatures at SIU Carbondale, teaching ESL and Spanish. In addition, he has several years of experience teaching Spanish in the public school system here in the U.S. He earned two B.A.s in Fine Arts from the University of California at Irvine as well as a B.A. in Spanish and an M.A. in TESOL from SIUC. Professional interests include Two-Way Immersion, Code switching in the Bilingual Classroom, the Lexical Approach and the role of the Phonological Loop in Second Language Acquisition.
